Is a cash-only business still even necessary, and can you afford to stick to it? With the rise of digital services and easy digital transactions, cash can be seen as archaic today! From the benefits of digital to how it helps you stay competitive, here’s a little bit of handy information.

The Rise of Digital Transactions

Cash has seen a decline over the past few years, and like that scene from iRobot, we simply flash our bank card, and transactions happen like magic. Back then, that was science fiction, but it is now a reality of modern business. Through connections made between merchant accounts and banks, digital transactions are easier and more convenient than ever. This has given rise to digital services like Google Pay, credit and debit card transactions, and even cryptocurrency.

Digital Has Tons of Benefits

The reign of cash could be coming to an end, no matter how much you enjoy looking at presidents and monarchs! The benefits of a digital system, despite privacy concerns, cannot be understated or underestimated. A business today will enjoy an increase in customers as there are those who prefer to pay with digital. There is also a reduced risk of theft without cash on the premises. Further, audits and accounting will benefit as digital leaves a healthy paper trail.

Cash-Only Businesses Are Risky Today

According to Embroke, 75% of employees have stolen from their employer’s business, and this includes cash. They say cash is king, and to some extent, that’s true, but perhaps not in the way it used to be. This might be because cash is a lucrative thing to steal, and it doesn’t have the same traceability as a digital footprint, making your business a target for thieves. Today, businesses can use cryptocurrency and other digital methods that offer a higher level of safety.

Keeping Up with Competition

If you aren’t at least considering installing digital payment systems, you can pretty much bet the competition is. While cash is more convenient, it doesn’t come with many benefits. To stay competitive, offering multiple payment systems widens the customer base, especially among younger crowds. You don’t have to revamp your entire business plan either, as you can start small with something like a card reader and expand from there, avoiding customer frustration.

The Cashless Society

So, are we heading into a cashless society? The World Economic Forum promotes the benefits of going digital and removing cash altogether, which it sees as outdated and dangerous. It believes that a switch to digital systems will help with financial education, remove the drawbacks of cash (such as tracking), and build a stronger digital infrastructure. However, it has been stated multiple times that countries like the UK have no plans to adapt to a cashless society.

Summary

The rise of the digital transformation is contributing to company reformation as they switch from cash-only businesses to convenient merchant-based systems. One reason is that cash has become a risk, due to theft, but there is no evidence that we are becoming a cashless society.
