Whenever you start a new business venture, you need individuals who can really support you. Many entrepreneurs believe that the only professionals they need are marketing experts and software developers. But the deeper you go into the business world, the more you realise that that isn’t the case. You need skilled individuals who can protect you legally and financially against the risks that you face.

A mentor

The first place you want to start is with a mentor. You need someone with experience in your industry who can show you the ropes and help you avoid the mistakes that they made along the way. If they have experience, they probably know where the pitfalls lie and how to sidestep them. Once you have a mentor on your side, you can accelerate your growth and benefit from their existing networks to get things done.

An accountant

While it might sound boring, you also need an accountant. These are professionals who can protect you against tax authorities and ensure that you remain compliant with the law. Many entrepreneurs get into trouble because they don’t follow all of the financial rules that they’re supposed to abide by. They don’t produce the right types of financial statements or balance sheet accounting. When this happens, it can be more challenging for them to avoid fines.

An attorney or legal expert

The same is true of a business attorney or legal expert. Again, these professionals are necessary for dealing with things like:

  • Partnerships, mergers and acquisitions
  • Intellectual property
  • Employment issues
  • Contracts and compliance

Experts are particularly helpful for businesses that need to expand overseas. Working within existing regulatory frameworks can be challenging, but having an expert on site prevents you from having to make costly fixes later or even facing criminal charges.

The coach or advisor

The coach or the advisor is a bit different from a mentor, whereas a mentor is somebody who has been in your industry and has a more personal relationship with you. A coach is somebody who can provide you with the tactics and offers structured guides for what you should do next. They’re also very good if you’re somebody who struggles with accountability. They actively push you forwards and give you the right tools and knowledge you need to succeed long-term.

The cheerleader

Another person you want in your life as an entrepreneur is a cheerleader. This is somebody who is supportive, like a friend or a family member. You need somebody who believes in you and is willing to encourage you through the difficult times.

Inevitably, as an entrepreneur, you’ll face setbacks and problems. You’ll find it hard to move forward and really get to the point where you want to be at. Having a cheerleader is a great way to give you the strength you need to do the things you need to do.

So, those are the people that you really need. Yes, it’s great to have somebody who’s fantastic at operations or an execution specialist, but often it’s these core relationships mentioned here that are the most impactful.
