The GOP plan to seize and keep power has been on a slow roll since 1972. When Richard Nixon realized that he could woo southern racists over to the GOP with the Southern Strategy, he began a change electorally. However, the gerrymandering effects of the GOP state house take over in 2008-2010 have had far more devastating effects. The GOP has made a concerted effort to disenfranchise democrat voters by splitting areas that vote blue into small chunks of otherwise republican districts. This means that from the state level to Congress, it is far harder for democrats to get elected and creates nearly safe GOP seats. Using this method, the GOP is able to stay in power despite their lack of new ideas and popularity.
In this video from Robert Reich, former Labor Department secretary, he illustrates how the GOP did it and how they are planning to stay in power far longer than they otherwise would simply by rigging the game in their favor.
